Hindus hold protest against ACT for insulting God and Goddesses:

On June 11th, 2005, Hindu Awareness Organization of North America, staged a protest in front of AIDS Committee of Toronto (ACT) at 399 Church Street, Toronto. This protest was held to condemn the blatant and shameless display of degrading and pornographic images and icons of Hindu Gods and Goddesses, at an Aids Awareness fund raising event held last Saturday, June 4th, 2005 at Metro Toronto Convention Centre.

The "Hindu" response to smile away insults should not be mistaken as a weakness, but rather maturity to ignore immature and ignorant behaviour. But, putting a poke in heart and then saying sorry, wouldn't wash away the misconduct that ACT has committed. For ACT insulting Hindus was a tactical plan to gain cheap publicity and profit from it. Almost all practising religions of the world are reflected in Bollywood, so why did ACT chose only Hindu images and icons?

If the event was indeed "Bollywood bling meets rhinestone cowboy", then it should've had people dressed up as movie stars not gods. What insulted Hindus the most is that even after ACT was cautioned on their behaviour, they still chose to continue with the insulting of Hindus. Not to leave any stone unturned to insult Hindus, they even handed materials with front cover having nude models posing as Hindu Gods.

The marchers were led by Hindu leaders of North America handed over a memorandum to AIDA Committee of Toronto. On this occasion, the demonstrators were carrying placards, Hindu flags, banner with slogans “STOP demeaning Hindu religion”, “Don’t abuse Hindu religion”.

Speaking on this occasion, Spoke Person and Organisational Secretary of the HAONA, Anil V. Shringi asked all religious organizations and Human rights organizations to take note of this discriminatory act of AIDS Committee of Toronto.

Senior Vice-President, Jeff Lal said, "Through-out the world the nihilist groups are destroying the peace loving and the ancient Hindu religion.”

Chairman, Dr. Ranvir Sharda pointed out that AIDS Committee is spreading the “discriminatory virus” in our Canadian society which is fare more dangerous then HIV/AIDS virus.

Protest was started at 11:00 AM sharp and finished on time at 12 noon. We thank all pro- active Hindus of Toronto who came forward after receiving a short notice.
